Dear Dr. Vinny,
I have been keeping more and more 90+ point screwtop wines in my cellar. The screwcap is usually composed of a plastic foil wafer. It would seem unwise to have a plastic product in contact with an ethanol containing fluid for long periods of time. Would it be OK to cellar screwcap bottles upright?
—Jason H., Green Bay, Wisc.

Dear Jason,
Yes, you can store screwcap bottles upright, sideways, any way you wish. The reason for storing bottles of wine on their sides is to keep the cork moist so it doesn’t dry out, but in the case of screwcaps, this doesn’t apply. I just keep them in my cellar’s racks with all the rest of my wine.

But I don’t share your concerns about screwcaps. In a screwcap, the wine is in contact with a polymer liner—something that has been used in food and pharmaceutical packaging for a very long time. The producers of screwcaps assure me that they are adapted for contact with wine, to protect against deterioration or degradation. This material is authorized, not just by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, but also by the European Commission and other equivalent authorities all over the world. I’ve never heard any such concerns or seen a study that shows any negative impact on wines aged under screwcaps.
